Weird and Wonderful Heritage

Weird and Wonderful Stories from the Sunshine Coast | Friday 1 May | Bankfoot House

Weird and Wonderful Heritage

What is heritage, really? It’s not just old buildings and serious history books — it’s the surprising, funny, tragic and extraordinary stories that have shaped who we are today. This presentation invites audiences to discover the unexpected side of the region’s past through a rich collection of images, objects and stories drawn from local collections, including Bankfoot House, Cultural Heritage, and Picture Sunshine Coast.

From sly grog charges in the 1870s and home‑made diving suits on the Maroochy River, to record‑breaking sharks, plane landings on beaches and the dramatic story of the Queen of the Colonies, this event showcases the people, places and moments that make Sunshine Coast heritage anything but boring.

The presentation challenges common misconceptions about history, highlighting everyday ingenuity, resilience and humour alongside moments of tragedy and triumph. Featuring historic photographs, artefacts and fascinating anecdotes, it encourages audiences to think differently about heritage and to explore the Sunshine Coast’s heritage places, stories and collections — both online and in person.

This event is ideal for anyone curious about local history, unusual stories, or the rich and sometimes quirky past hidden in plain sight across the Sunshine Coast.

Heritage doesn’t have to be boring — come and see why.
