Local Ground

Vernacular furniture and connections to place | 4 Sept - 29 Jan 2027 | Bankfoot House

Local Ground is an exhibition that brings together history, making and contemporary practice through a dialogue between nineteenth-century furniture maker William Andrew Grigor and contemporary chairmaker, researcher and author Dr Michael Epworth.

Inspired by furniture held in the Bankfoot House collection, the exhibition explores how objects can connect us to place, memory and the people who lived and worked in the Glass House Mountains region. Through newly created works, Dr Epworth responds to Grigor's original pieces, reinterpreting their forms, materials and stories through a contemporary lens.

William Andrew Grigor was a young member of the pioneering Grigor family whose furniture reflects both ingenuity and a deep connection to local life. Local Ground examines how everyday objects can reveal extraordinary stories about the relationship between people, landscape and the resources available to them.

The exhibition features newly made works constructed from locally sourced and salvaged materials, alongside interpretive displays that reveal the making process, historical research and connections between past and present.

Visitors are invited to explore how traditional hand skills, sustainable making practices and vernacular furniture traditions continue to resonate today.
