Storytime sessions give a head start to language and literacy

Nurture your child’s love of language by reading together at Sunshine Coast Council’s free weekly storytelling sessions at library branches across the Coast.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said research showed reading with children is the single most important activity families can do to help children learn to read and write once they start school.

“Up to 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years so the more you read and talk with your child the more their brain responds,” Cr McKay said.

“Council’s storytime sessions for under-fives are the perfect activity for parents to give their children the best start to their life.

“Storytime sessions include stories, rhymes and songs to encourage language and listening skills, promote attention and curiosity.

“The first half of all sessions comprise stories and songs with the second half a craft or colour-in activity.

“Storytime sessions are held from Tuesday to Saturday at council’s eight library branches.

“Sunshine Coast Libraries also offer a range of interactive sessions and resources to aid your child's development during their first five years. So drop by your local branch and talk to one of our friendly librarians for more information.”

Please note, storytime does not run on public holidays or during school holidays. No bookings are required.
