Topic: Public Cemeteries of the Sunshine Coast
This research report is a contextual history that considers the Sunshine Coast’s public cemeteries in relation to each other, highlighting common themes and unique qualities. Research questions include: How were cemeteries managed? Who was involved? What were their rules and regulations? How much did it cost to be buried in the local cemetery? How did the landscape of the cemetery evolve of the years? What were the maintenance challenges? What sort of memorials and enclosures were permitted? Who were the craftsmen who created the memorials? How much did a headstone cost?
Most of the cemeteries researched still survive relatively intact and can be accessed by the public. The majority are on the Sunshine Coast Council’s local heritage list.
