Young Queensland artists shine in latest gallery exhibition
Driven by a keen interest in modern history, film, television, art, design and architecture, artist Sam Cranstoun has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize (2009) had his work exhibited at the Milani Gallery and QAGOMA in Brisbane, and will now feature in a new exhibition Close enough: Young Queensland artists opening at Caloundra Regional Gallery today (March 1).

Driven by a keen interest in modern history, film, television, art, design and architecture, artist Sam Cranstoun has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize (2009) had his work exhibited at the Milani Gallery and QAGOMA in Brisbane, and will now feature in a new exhibition Close enough: Young Queensland artists opening at Caloundra Regional Gallery today (March 1).
While he has works in the collections of the UQ Art Museum and QUT Art Museum, Brisbane, Sam’s Sunshine Coast exhibition is significant for the artist who says Caloundra holds a special place in his heart.
“Caloundra has been my family’s regular holiday spot for the past 30 years,” Sam said.
“To be exhibiting in Caloundra, somewhere that has been such a big part of my life, is incredibly significant.
“The Sunshine Coast, and Caloundra in particular, has always struck me as creatively engaged, so it's great to see a relevant and exciting institutional show being exhibited in such a beautiful and intimate space.”
Sam’s work will be showcased alongside three other talented Queensland artists - Dale Harding, Alice Lang and Tyza Stewart.
“I’m proud to be exhibiting my work alongside such important Queensland artists,” Sam said.
“Dale, Tyza and Alice are all creating such important, interesting and relevant work, it's a privilege to exhibit with them.”
Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the gallery was proud to exhibit work from the next generation of Queensland artists.
“The artistic talent is extraordinary and provides a great window into the future of art,” Cr Baberowski.
“Providing these young artists with an avenue to exhibit their work and share their talents with our community and visitors to our region is what makes life just that bit richer for everyone.”
Close enough: Young Queensland artists includes works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture and video. The artists explore a range of issues from the personal to the political, demonstrating the diverse ways in which artists make sense of the world and their place within it.
