The two historians appointed for the Sunshine Coast Historian in Residence Program 2021-2022 were Dr Ray Kerkhove and USC PhD student Kate Kirby.

Bankfoot House Historian in Residence - Dr Ray Kerkhove

Topic: Contacts and Context: First Nations peoples and Early Settlers Around Bankfoot House and the Glasshouse Mountains Region.

Dr Kerkhove’s study involved exploring the connection between the family of Bankfoot House and First Nations peoples. He also undertook mapping and names, including likely translation and their deeper significance of Sunshine Coast First Nations sites, working closely with the Kabi Kabi and Jinibara peoples.

Heritage Library - Kate Kirby

Topic: Sunshine Coast gold 1901 - 2021: local high-performing athletes winning on the state, national and world stage.

Kate Kirby examined Sunshine Coast’s sporting history, including athletes winning on the world stage between 1901 and 2021. Her research involved community consultation as she delved into celebrated lo local sporting sisters, north coast fitness programs and camps, celebrations and awards of sporting clubs, and the region’s boxing champions.
